Question: If I'm building a new home, when should I begin talking to a window covering specialist?

The best time to bring in a window covering specialist to discuss motorization is during the early stages of construction planning—ideally before or during the electrical walk-through. Here’s a breakdown of the ideal timing and why:
Optimal Timing:
1. During architectural planning or framing stage
Why: This allows the specialist to collaborate with your builder, electrician, and AV team to plan for wiring, outlets, recessed pockets, or structural supports for hidden shade systems or motors.
2. Before the electrical walk-through
Why: Pre-wiring is critical for hardwired motorization (like Lutron or Somfy systems). If you wait too long, you may be limited to battery-powered solutions or face costly retrofits.
What the Specialist Can Help With:
Pre-wiring plans for low-voltage or 120V motors
Placement of controls (keypads, remotes, app integration)
Choosing between hardwired vs battery-powered
Planning ceiling or fascia pockets for hidden shades
Smart home integration (with Lutron, Control4, etc.)
Designing custom drapery or shades to match your aesthetic and automation needs.
Bring in your window covering specialist as early as possible—ideally at the framing stage and no later than the electrical walk-through. This ensures your home is optimized for motorization without compromising design or incurring extra costs.
BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS
For some reason window coverings tend to be a last-minute thought. Sticker shock happens and budgets are slashed quickly because we are typically the last ones in the door before move in. I strongly urge clients to meet with us early in the process, so they know what to expect from a budget standpoint. Home Depot paper shades are not attractive and peel all the paint around your casings so BEWARE!
