(And Why Battery-Powered Solutions Are Changing Everything)

So many of our clients want to know about motorization options. And who can blame them! Motorization has taken off. There’s a scene from the movie “The Holiday” where Kate Winslet who’s holidaying at Cameron Diaz’s Hollywood home hits a single button in the primary bedroom which takes a light filled bedroom to theatre quality darkness. I can’t tell you how many requests we get for that operation and blackout option.

So what are the motorization options available for window coverings today? The good news is the technology has evolved tremendously—and so have the possibilities.

Battery-Powered Motorization

Battery-powered shades have seen a major leap forward in recent years. They’re now quieter, longer-lasting, and more powerful than ever—making them an ideal choice for both retrofits and new installations. The best part? No need for hardwiring. This opens up motorization for spaces that were previously too costly or logistically complicated to wire.

With sleek, rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs and ultra-slim motors, even large window openings can now be outfitted with automated shading. In fact, the maximum shade sizes have increased dramatically, meaning you can enjoy motorization on oversized windows, sliding doors, and expansive glass walls—without compromising on performance or aesthetics. There will also eventually be options for battery operated exterior shades. We will do a blog post on that down the road.

Hardwired Motorization

For new construction or major remodels, hardwired systems remain the gold standard. They offer seamless integration with smart home automation systems (like Lutron’s HomeWorks or Somfy’s TaHoma), and eliminate the need for battery charging altogether. Hardwired shades are ideal for whole-home projects or for clients looking for a fully automated, high-performance solution.

Control Options

Today’s motorized window coverings can be operated in a variety of intuitive ways:

  • Handheld remotes

  • Wall-mounted keypads

  • Smartphone apps

  • Voice control via Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit

  • Scheduled automation based on time of day or solar position

Whether you’re looking for a fully integrated smart home experience or a simple, elegant solution for hard-to-reach windows, there’s a motorization option to suit every space and lifestyle.

At Savoy Window Coverings, we proudly work with industry leaders like Lutron and Somfy to deliver reliable, stylish, and cutting-edge motorized shading solutions.
